Coach Jewell

Lead 14U Coach

Coach Jewell's water polo journey began on a recreational team in Portland, Oregon, where he first honed his skills as a goalie. His first USAWP tournament as a 14u was in Washington, at an athletic club outside in the pouring rain. At Westview High School, he played four years on the Varsity Water Polo team, serving as co-captain during his senior year. After attending the University of Utah, Coach Jewell helped lead his team to a 4th place finish at the CWPA Club National Tournament, placing behind powerhouse teams like USC, UCLA, and Texas in his Sophomore year. Later, back in Oregon, he took on coaching roles for the 10U and 12U teams at Lake Oswego Water Polo (LOWPO). In 2017, Coach Jewell attended the USAWP Holiday Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where he was drawn to refereeing. Back home, he found that his favorite part of practice was refereeing the scrimmage at the end of the night, so he began his referee career working at the High School level and progressed to refereeing for USA Water Polo in the Pacific Northwest Zone. He traveled and refereed in various regions, including California, Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Southwest Zone. His dedication and skill as a referee led him to officiate at five consecutive Junior Olympics. In 2022, he moved to California, spending time in San Diego, Orange, and now San Mateo County, where he continued to grow his career and earned a spot on the CWPA collegiate club referee list, coming full circle to referee the level he once played at. He attended the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he had the pleasure to witness the Women's Gold Medal match firsthand. With over 7 years of experience, refereeing an average of 400 games per year, Coach Jewell has seen water polo at its highest level. His deep understanding of the game, combined with his focus on developing players through a growth mindset, will be invaluable to our team. He is committed to teaching the fundamentals of the game, skill development, and creating an environment where players can thrive one step at a time.
