Spring 2010 Water Polo

BAC offers a multi-faceted spring water polo program with training opportunities for all athletes between the ages of 6-18. Available opportunities consist of local competitions, skill clinics, and open scrimmages. Local team competition is available to boys and girls aged 10-14 and provides an excellent opportunity to gain game experience and develop new skills. The skill clinics are open to all athletes seeking improvements in their abilities, from beginners to experienced players. The open scrimmage program is geared towards high school athletes who wish to continue improving their water polo skills without compromising their spring swim training. Individual improvement and team development are the goals for all spring programs. All interested athletes are encouraged to come out and join one of the best aquatic clubs on the peninsula!

Pee Wee Polo

The PeeWee program is designed for kids ages 6-9 who want to learn about the sport, but aren’t quite ready to be competing. Practices will be held in the small pool where the kids can stand – allowing them to focus on learning the game, without worrying about treading water. The practices will be focused on learning the rules and general strategy of the game. Kids will also begin to develop their ball handling skills. This practice group is designed to give our athletes a base of knowledge about the sport before they join our competitive teams.

This season the PeeWee group will be split by gender. We have found that this split benefits all of our athletes. For questions, please contact Head Water Polo Coach Amy Gardner: amy@burlingameaquatics.com.

Spring Competitive Teams

BAC’s competitive spring program for athletes 10-14 will be split into four groups by age and gender. The 12 and Under teams will be geared more toward beginning players, while the 14 and Under teams will be geared toward experienced players. Placement on either team is up to the discretion of the coaching staff and will be based on age, ability, attitude, and commitment level.

12 and Under Team
The 12U teams consist mainly of players who are either completely new to the game or who are still working to grasp the basic format and structure of play. In this group athletes are taught, among other basic skills, how to eggbeater properly, how to dribble a ball, how to pass and shoot, and how to function and react within a rudimentary offense and defense. While seeking to develop the fundamental skills of the game, this group also focuses its energy on enjoying the sport so that a lasting interest and sense of confidence may grow. Competitions are intended to foster that enjoyment in a low-stress and positive environment. Any athlete between the ages of 10-12 is eligible to participate with this team.

14 and Under Team

The 14U teams concentrate mainly on perfecting and expanding the basic skills necessary to play water polo and putting such skills into game context. A large portion of practice time is devoted to developing a strong sense of the water, effective passing and shooting techniques, situational ball handling, and commonly used offensive and defensive strategies. Players learn how to move efficiently in the water, to economize motion as a team, and to recognize advantage situations. In addition to being exposed to new skills and concepts, members of this group are also challenged to begin understanding how to be a productive member of a team. The playing environment for this group is competitive yet relaxed. Any athlete between the ages of 10-14 is eligible to participate with this team provided that the coaching staff feels the athlete’s skills and attitude in the water are at the appropriate level.

BAC Spring Break Camp

This spring BAC is offering its first ever Spring Break Camp for athletes in middle school. This camp is a great opportunity for kids who are interested in water polo, but are not ready to commit for a whole season. Over the course of the camp we will outline and review all the key aspects of the game, such as passing, shooting, eggbeater (treading water), basic rules, and standard offensive and defensive positions. This is a great introduction to the sport for athletes who are interested in water polo but have had little or no exposure to how it is played.

For complete details go to our Spring Break Camp page.

BAC Spring Open Scrimmages

BAC offers a spring open scrimmage program to all high school athletes. The open scrimmage program is an opportunity to play water polo in a game-simulated environment. The program is intended to allow members to continue their involvement in water polo without the necessity of making a large time commitment. The coaching staff will supervise and referee all play, and will offer feedback to participants throughout the program. All scrimmaging will be inter-squad; outside teams will not be incorporated. This is a great opportunity for all athletes to gain quality playing experience without feeling the pressure of games and tournaments. Athletes can use this opportunity to try new skills and positions and to experiment without concern over scores, win-loss records, etc. Every participant will be given an equal opportunity to compete and to enjoy the game!
